The Galileo Services Association, at its board meeting held recently, appointed abertis telecom, the abertis Group's telecommunications infrastructure operator and a key partner of the Eutelsat (32%) and Hispasat (33.4%) satellite systems, as an Executive Member
The Galileo Services Association, created in 2002 with the aim of developing satellite positioning technology and services, is made up of more than 28 companies from the European private sector.
Galileo Services brings together telecommunications operators, as well as companies from the aerospace, sea and land transport and security and defence sectors.
The Galileo satellite positioning system, which has been developed under the auspices of the EU, is the alternative to the existing systems - GPS and GLONASS - developed by the United States and Russia, respectively. It is a civilian-run system and is expected to be launched in 2014.
abertis telecom could play an important role in the operation of the Galileo system due to its presence in both the telecommunications sector and the sectors where Galileo will offer its services. As an Executive Member of Galileo Services, it will thus form part of the working parties created for this purpose and will coordinate the work necessary for its development.
