New CeBIT forum on smart technologies for connected homes
Date: Fri, 01/27/2012 - 14:54
CeBIT has further expanded its extensive conference program with a new specialist forum dedicated to intelligent technologies and solutions for connected homes
The Smart Home Forum will be held on each day of the fair (6 to 10 March 2012) and will explore all aspects of smart home living. The forum's program partners include BITKOM (the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media) and the Connected Living Innovation Center. "We are delighted at BITKOM's decision to give greater attention to smart home themes at CeBIT and we welcome its active input into the program for our new Smart Home Forum," Deutsche Messe's Senior Vice-President in charge of CeBIT, Frank Pörschmann, said in a recent interview.
Mr. Pörschmann noted that digital networking solutions for smart homes promised significant growth for the ICT industry, particularly in the area of energy management. The key, he said, was to develop the standards and cross-industry cooperation networks necessary to enable the new business models that were needed to realize this potential. "The energy sector is on the brink of a transformation process that will require a total re-think by all involved. CeBIT is one of the most important hubs of this process, a place where key players from the ICT and energy sectors can gather and share ideas. It is the 'matchmaker' for an increasingly converging world," he said.
A recent study by BITKOM indicates that in Germany alone the market for network-capable IT, telecommunications and consumer electronics devices is likely to grow in value to 16 billion euros by the end of 2011 - an increase of almost 28 percent over 2010. Michael Schidlack, a smart homes expert at BITKOM, believes the writing is on the wall for TVs, washing machines, lighting and the like as stand-alone solutions. "Interest in smart homes is mounting, although there are still a lot of issues that need to be discussed and ironed out," he said. "The Smart Home Forum at CeBIT is the perfect platform for dealing with these sorts of issues. It is also an excellent opportunity to find new cooperation partners and brainstorm ideas for new business models."
Among the big names on the list of speakers for the Forum are Volker Müller, Chairman and CEO of Expert AG, Dr. Michael Westermeier, Technical Product Manager at RWE Smart Home, and Professor Lothar Abicht, Director of the isw Institute for Structural Policy and Economic Development. The Forum will have space for more than 50 participants and will be held in Hall 19 as part of the CeBIT life platform. The event is aimed at resellers of smart home products and solutions, skilled tradespeople, architects, architectural engineers, systems integrators, utility providers and tech-savvy consumers.
The supporting Smart Home exhibition area will feature displays of smart home technologies and solutions by companies from the energy, electronics and consumer electronics industries. Visitors to the exhibition area will be able to walk through an on-site smart home and discover for themselves the benefits of connected living.
