Date: Mon, 02/21/2011 - 12:41
The MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) announced the expansion of its highly successful certification program, with the introduction of a Carrier Ethernet Professional Certification program for individuals in the telecommunications industry. The program certifies expertise in Carrier Ethernet technologies, standards, services and applications.
The MEF certification programs are the telecommunication industry’s reference for Carrier Ethernet excellence. Launched in 2005, the MEF cerfication program verifies equipment and service provider conformance with the MEF specifications. With its new program for professionals, the MEF will certify individuals who possess a baseline of Carrier Ethernet knowledge. The new program will support the explosive growth of Carrier Ethernet world-wide by making it easier to identify experts in the field.
Professional Certification is awarded to individuals who successfully pass tests developed by distinguished leaders and experts in the Carrier Ethernet industry. MEF is in the process of authorizing training providers to offer Carrier Ethernet training courses that prepare individuals to successfully complete MEF exams.
MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (CECP)
The MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional consists of a comprehensive written exam covering Carrier Ethernet technology and service fundamentals from an applications perspective and is suited for product and technical marketing managers, pre-sales and application engineers, product planners and technically oriented sales professionals. MEF Certified Professionals will be awarded an official MEF certificate and listed in the on-line Directory of MEF Certified Professionals posted on the MEF and EthernetAcademy.net websites.
Speaking at the MPLS & Ethernet World Congress 2011 in Paris, Nan Chen, MEF President, said: “With Carrier Ethernet Services being the fastest growing data services segment, there is an increasing demand by Service Providers, Equipment Manufacturers and Large Enterprises for professionals with a solid baseline understanding of Carrier Ethernet Services. The program recognizes professionals with an industry-backed certification of their skills and capabilities.
Successful CECP candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in the following areas:
• MEF Carrier Ethernet services definitions for E-Line, E-LAN and E-Tree
• Advantages of different Carrier Ethernet Access technologies
• Definitions and application of UNI, EVC and ENNI in Carrier Ethernet networks
• Key UNI, ENNI, EVC and OVC service attributes
• Definitions of MEF 9, 14, 18 vendor equipment and product certifications
• Key service requirements for target Carrier Ethernet service applications (wholesale access, Ethernet access to IP, mobile backhaul, retail Ethernet services)
• Comparing and positioning Carrier Ethernet services to layer 2 Frame Relay, IP/MPLS and TDM private line
• Understanding of Circuit Emulation over Ethernet
• Role of Service, Operations Administration and Maintenance (SOAM) in Carrier Ethernet Networks
Speaking at the NetEvents Press Summit in Barcelona, Kevin Vachon, MEF COO, commented: “MEF`s equipment and services certification programs have experienced broad industry acceptance and are an important enabler of the standardization and globalization of Carrier Ethernet. With extensive Carrier Ethernet infrastructure now in place, the CECP program targets technical sales and marketing professionals that are key to monetizing these assets with new services and accelerating growth in our industry”.
The new MEF program is currently in the pilot phase with general availability scheduled for the second quarter of this year. Authorized training providers will also be announced in that quarter as well.
