The launch came one year after the two telecom market leaders agreed on the service at the last MWC. Standardization for NFC platforms and linkage between coupon systems are now complete, and the service was demonstrated at the MWC for the first time in the world.
To mark the launch of the service, KT and DoCoMo will make available NFC coupon roaming for KT subscribers coming to Japan. From this April, they can use NFC coupons at selected stores within Japanese airports and shopping malls downtown Tokyo to get a discount.
In addition to coupons, NFC roaming service users will be provided diverse shopping information such as location map both in Korean and in Japanese.
They can also get discount coupons, tourist information, and many other benefits just by placing their NFC phone over a smart poster at the airport or reading a QR code with it. Visit to a partner store marked in the map linked with a coupon may bring them benefits such as a free gift and discount.
By the first half of next year, DoCoMo subscribers visiting Korea will get packaged NFC services comprising not only roaming coupons but also payment.
KT will use this Korea-Japan NFC roaming service as a platform to expand its NFC service globally and be an NFC leader in both Asian and the global market.
“KT will work with NTT DoCoMo to launch diverse cross-border services including coupon and mobile payment between Korea and Japan,” said Yang Hyun-Mi, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Strategy Business Unit. “We will offer more useful services available internationally by partnering with major telecom service providers in other countries.”
