The special order card is a permanent, rechargeable farecard featuring an image of President Barack Obama. The cards can be purchased online from WMATA’s web site and at specified locations across the metro area until supplies are exhausted.
“We are very pleased to be able to offer these commemorative SmarTrip® cards to our customers in time for the Inauguration," said Cyndi Zieman, Metro’s Director of SmarTrip® Program and Fare Payment Systems. “G&D really came through on such short notice to get us these cards in time for the Inauguration. The cards have been extremely popular with our customers and are likely to become collectors’ items. We are pleased G&D turned this order around in such a short time.”
“We are thrilled to assist WMATA with production and delivery of these highly anticipated and limited quantity cards,” said G&D’s Vice President of Government Solutions, Hassan Tavassoli. “They are unique and valuable memorabilia for this historic event.”
SmarTrip® is a contactless smart card that can be loaded with a value up to $300 to pay for fares on Metrorail and Metrobus and for parking fees at Metro-operated parking facilities. The commemorative Obama SmarTrip® cards are available for purchase in two versions, for $10 each without fare value, or for $20, which includes $10 fare value loaded onto the card.
With the introduction of contactless cards into the WMATA system, G&D began delivering SmarTrip® cards to support WMATA programs, a long relationship that continues today. Since 2000, G&D has delivered over 5 million SmarTrip® cards.
