Intelsat, the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced it signed a contract with Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales (TSA), the broadcast unit of Spain’s Telefonica S.A., for capacity on the Intelsat 905 satellite (IS-905), located at 335.5º E. The multi-year contract offers TSA the satellite infrastructure it requires to deliver content throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands from Spain’s leading pay TV channels broadcaster, Teuve
The IS-905 satellite currently transmits some of the most in-demand, Spanish-language programming from leading broadcasters to thousands of cable headends throughout this region. Under the terms of the agreement, Teuve will use the IS-905 capacity to distribute its 11 channels to its affiliates; six movie channels (CINESTAR, EXTREME, MGM, SOMOS, CINEMATK and CANAL 18); and five entertainment channels (NATURA, BUZZ, BUZZ ROJO, PACHA and KIDSCO). All of its programming will be distributed through different cable networks in Spain and reach 2 million homes.
“This agreement provides us with the highest quality access we require to distribute our programming in Spain,” said Joaquin Ramos Hernandez, Transmission Manager for TSA. “Intelsat consistently delivers highly reliable and secure transmission services, which are critical for our operations and long-term growth.”
“This contract for TSA to deliver cable programming on our satellite confirms the strong pull our neighborhood on the IS-905 has for the Spanish-language TV market,” said Jean-Philippe Gillet, Intelsat’s Regional Vice President, Europe & Middle East. “Within our fleet of 51, Intelsat currently operates 27 satellites—four of which serve Europe and the Middle East—that are part of leading video neighborhoods around the world.”
